THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN is located between Asheville and Boone, NC - just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, America's Favorite Drive. February brings one of our favorite events - Riddlefest! (February 18, 2012 in Town Center) - honoring local son, Lesley Riddle, who was the genius behind much of the Carter-Cash family musical fame. Our local Parkway Playhouse, the longest continuously running summer theater in North Carolina, staged the fabulous World-Premiere of Esley, based on this local legend. An Amherst college professor is putting the story in book form and Carter-Cash family members attend the festival along with other dignitaries. But my favorite part, my absolute favorite, is when local college students take the stage to show that this deep tradition of gospel and bluegrass music is alive and better than ever in America. ETSU has the Bluegrass Pride Band that has traveled the world to much acclaim. I am uploading one of their travel videos to Burnsville for this event (see above). It does not do justice to the extreme talent of this very young group of musicians. (They playfully banter through most of the video, but you get a little of their music at the end and a sneak preview of the App State Gospel Choir.) The ETSU ensemble is a must-see at a live performance. Then, Appalachian State comes in with their renowned Gospel Choir that will rock Town Center - as well as your soul.

Personal Considerations: Downsizing from a large, unique historic homestead here in Yancey County to a small, private mountain retreat intentioned as the main headquarters as homeowners travel, continue mission support work abroad and spend additional time at their coastal home. Architectural Style: A Rustic Mission Image with Rock and Timber Accents

Design Priorities: Situated on site to take advantage of the topography and, of course, the views

Given today's economic situation, especially in the real estate market, it is refreshing to see developers listen and understand what people want and to provide a first class development. They do this while still preserving the beauty and heritage that the mountains of Yancey County provide - with as little disruption as possible. The peaceful, tranquil environment is unmatched - from the many hiking trails, to the streams, trout ponds, and waterfalls. How has the current economic slump in real estate changedyour approach to client interaction, or has it?

There is not as muchinterest in building homes as 3 years ago, although there are still a number ofclients that still want to build with quality design. Our approach has not really changed in thatwe have to take each client and individually solve their problems, meet theirneeds and wishes. There is no stockplan. Everyone deserves to have whatthey want. What has changed in realestate is that most people are looking for deals, and this is true as well forarchitects. We have to work as we alwayshave - very conscientiously – with a truthful, honest, open approach. This has not changed. There just are not as many clients in today’smarket.

Has the real estate market downturn impacted your designapproach? I assume design in architecturechanges with economic change. Is thatcorrect and, if so, how – on a personal level?

No, our designapproach has not changed. The approachin design is to evaluate the needs and wishes of the client and its relationshipto the property. One aspect of change isthat some clients are paying cash as it is difficult for people to getloans. However, our design approachremains constant - to listen to the client - what they are saying, what theyare not saying - and design accordingly.

What are you hearing from a client that is different fromsay 3 years ago? Are smaller homes morethe trend? What square footage is beingrequested? Other?

Smaller homes aremore the trend but with high quality in design and specifications. But I do have one client that still wants a7,000 sq. ft. home. I have tried toencourage smaller, but this is a dream of theirs. We are also seeing much more remodeling thannew starts.

What changes in amenities or trends are clients nowrequesting?

People still want goodquality. Plans are still open, casual -no formal dining. They still wanttheaters – want to entertain in their home with themselves, family, and largeand small groups of friends. They stillwant good quality in cabinets, windows, as well as a good use of the lot. Herein the mountains that, of course, translates to windows with views.

Your portfolio includes private, corporate, religiousdesigns – from high-end to moderate. Where does design for The Cove at Celo Mountain fit into your spectrum?

Our vision of Celofits right in with our portfolio – large or small homes that fit into thenatural mountain setting. The design hasto be well thought out, good use of lot, giving owners what they want.

Of the design styles preferred within The Cove at CeloMountain covenants (American Lodge, American Craftsman, and Adirondack), couldyou show us works from your portfolio that reflect these genres? Do you have a spin-off of these that is morecharacteristic of what you envision for The Cove at Celo Mountain?

We have includedthree homes that exhibit quality design in layout, taking advantage of thenatural mountain setting and views as well as the use of natural materials - i.e., timbers, logs, stone and other naturalmaterials such as bark siding. The colorpallet also has to be considered when building in the mountains.

Walk through the typical first on-site meeting to the finalstages of your work with a client.

Our mission is notjust to design a home for someone but a satisfying lifestyle as well. We first meet with the client - usually in ouroffice - to get to know each other and the client’s wishes, needs, andfantasies. Then we go out and analyze thesite with the client, visualizing the design – picture yourself out 50 feet – upin the tree canopy – what would the view be from there? Imagine the sunset or the full moon orentertaining outdoors with a fire in the fireplace - get them excited about thepossibilities. We take the approach thatwe are very serious with their investment; we have to earn their trust inus. We then will do preliminary floorplans and their site plan. After they havehad time to study the design, we will make any desired changes or additions. Then the 3^rd dimension of thedesign development begins on the computer. We develop elevations and cross sections to help the client visualize theentire design. From there we go to the constructiondocuments – engineering, foundation, electrical, schedules, specifications,etc. We like to negotiate a contractprice from a list of qualified builders. The team approach in my experience puts everyone on the same page withthe same goals. From start to completionshould be about 8-16 months depending on size, weather, steepness of lot,etc. Almost exclusively, my clients aremuch more satisfied with the final outcome than they even dreamed orexpected. With us the whole design processis easy, comfortable, enjoyable and fulfilling.

We know that you and the Petersons have finalized designplans for their Cove at Celo Mountain home. Could you share those with us?

What I would reallylike to do with the Peterson home, is to have your viewers follow along as webegin the on-site work, and then update them with progress through tocompletion, so they can experience with these owners how enjoyable, easy andexciting this can be. We are almostfinished with the Peterson’s final version of the plans. Itwill be about 2700 square feet on 1 and ½ levels. We will start next week with photos of theirestate lot and the plans in a part of your blog allocated to this buildingprocess.

Any additional comments that you think it would bebeneficial for prospective clients to know?

Our children have been going to summer camp in NC for the last 6years. Living in the SC Low country, an escape from the summer heat isalways a welcome change. We had visited many towns and communities nearAsheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway over the last few years. In June wewere invited to visit the Cove at Celo Mountain when we picked up our kids fromcamp just south of Asheville. Not really knowing the area very well, wedecided to go exploring as its something we love to do. We are a very adventurousfamily having spent extended periods of time out west camping in the GrandTetons, Idaho & Oregon, rafting big whitewater on the Snake River andvarious other outdoor activities. We prefer the road less traveled &enjoy the beauty that surrounds us and appreciate nature.

To be honest we had no idea what we would findand were rather skeptical. What we foundwas what we had been looking for all along. A wonderful town full of friendly genuine people with diversebackgrounds and interests, a fabulous culinary treat in the Knife and Fork anda community well footed in the Arts. Our son is a musician and our daughter participates in theater andvisual arts. Her years at camp haveintroduced her to glasswork and pottery. With Penland School of Crafts just up the road & a theater in townthere are even more opportunities for both of them during the summer.

Now to Bigger issues like trout. There are “Big”Trout, almost certainly bigger on the end of the fly rod then in theriver. With the South and North ToeRiver just a crow’s fly away the fish don’t stand a chance for any fisherman ona mission. That’s were you will findLars on any free day. Just waiting for afish to rise. The fish he catches areway over the size of any recorded fish on record. At least that’s what I amtold.

As for me, working as a professional artist Ican't get a mile down the road without pulling over finding inspiration allaround me. When spring comes Ill be out and about painting in plein air. I tend to wander off the beaten path towhere the wild things are. Paintingsfrom the area will soon be posted at www.shannonrunquist.com.

We went looking for a piece of property and whatwe found was a beautiful community full of wonderful people & a well builtcottage on a rustling creek. This year we will be spending Thanksgivingin front of our fireplace with our parents too. Before long ourhome will be full of lasting memories. When we count our blessings wewill include The Cove. We are truly looking forward to meeting our newneighbors.

Pam shared these thoughts with me during a telephone conversation this week about what drew her to the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains and to the purchase of a beautiful, large estate home site within THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN - a premier gated community in a sanctuary setting located between Asheville and Boone, North Carolina - just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Last summer I came for a week to the Black Mountainarea. My daughter and her family hadrented this home that looked like a castle at the top of a mountain and asked familyto join her. I had a 2-hour layover inthe Asheville airport waiting for my daughter to pick me up, and so I startedbrowsing the brochures. The one for THECOVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN looked so intriguing and beautiful that I wanted to visitand see what it was all about, but I didn’thave a chance to visit that week. When I got back to Michigan, I asked a friend of mine if shewould like to go back to NC with me to visit. We came in early August and stayed again in Black Mountain – this timein a cabin.

I called you, Katherine, and set an appointment time with Paul to visit THE COVE ATCELO MOUNTAIN between the historic towns of Burnsville and Spruce Pine.I loved the way the community seemed to nestle into the mountain. Thenatural lay of the land was maintained, nature respected, and as many trees as possible preserved during construction using “limbing” ratherthan tree removal to provide views. I was so impressed with the waythe development had been done – with the paved roads, the manicured miles ofhiking trails, all the gathering places and parks – especially the main onewith the large fireplace and fire pit, cooking area and seating area - thetrout ponds, the children’s custom tree house and play area. I could just imagine the familygathering at night around that great fire place and fire pit at Greeter’sPark. It was like having your ownNational Park – without all the people. I knew I wanted my property at the top of the community – a large home site that would give mea beautiful view. Mylot has 160-degree panoramic views. Iwant to see the Blue Ridge Mountains - that I have always loved – out of everywindow.

I am not sure of my building date. I will complete only thefirst level at the beginning and take my time to complete the lower level. I will make a gradual transition from Michiganand my work here to my Blue Ridge mountain home there for afew weeks out of the year until my final permanent move to Western North Carolina. Dave loved my property there also – thought the view wasjust beautiful. He is very knowledgeableabout architecture and construction, so it was a big help to have him therewhile I met on-site with Armin Wessel, the architect, about my house plans.

The Asheville magazines you sent me and that I also pickedup are all so creative with ads and with events. You could conceivably attend 3 or 4 majorevents every week and do a large range of things all over this area fromsporting events to open-air plays, theater, craft shows, open studio tours andmore. I also love farm-to-table restaurants. I like to eat close to the land, which youcan do with all the small cafes around there and with the farm stands and markets all around where youcan buy local, fresh produce – most of it organic. Also the smalltowns are so much fun to visit; the creativity and talent there are amazing. Burnsville and Spruce Pine just struck me as friendly, warm communities ofgenuine people interested in what you have to say, in what your passions are,in getting you involved – like you did with me.

Asheville is also a big draw. I love that you see all ages of peopleeverywhere there – young adults, professionals, families, older people – all enjoyingthe sites, the restaurants, the galleries, the events. The diversity of people and offood is wonderful. As you also said, we have nevereaten in a restaurant in Asheville that was not excellent.

My great passion is being out in nature participating inoutdoor activities. I rarely sitdown. The area where THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAINis located is where all these mountain activities happen – whether you want toraft, hike, kayak, do canopy tours, fish, drive the Blue Ridge Parkway or other scenic routes, and on and on.

The Blue Ridge Mountains seem to gather around you and holdyou in their arms – protect you. It isjust such a warm feeling!

I took a few minutes to sit down with the COO of THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN, Randy Frederick, to get his take on the new construction ongoing within the community in November of 2011.

Randy, what sets the construction within THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN, and the community itself, apart from most Western North Carolina premier gated communities - from a Developer's standpoint?

Our spec houses are built to a higher code than typical houses in the Carolina mountains. What I mean by this - an example - is that there is a 7-county code that any home above 3,000 feet must be built for 120 m.p.h winds - which means the entire home has to have strapping. Most inspectors don't adhere to this since it is not a part of the NC code - but an extension of it. We do adhere to this.

Another example would be the 60' bridge we built just to the right of the entrance gate. We were told that since we are a private community we did not need to have engineering work done on this or a compaction test done, yet we built it to Florida code and had both of these done - much more expensive and time-consuming, but we are in this for the long-term, and our reputation means everything.

We also did not take the easy route while putting in roads and underground utilities by cutting down a large number of trees. We felt the North Carolina mountains did not need another community that was void of trees. We have concentrated on keeping the community as natural as we could to improve - enhance - the natural state by grooming it and putting in natural amenities such as miles of manicured hiking trails.

Also, at the outset we hired a land planner that took the whole community and put in a PDZ (Potential Development Zone) within each lot for a maximized view for that owner while allowing the same for surrounding owners. This provides a level of insurance to 1st buyers that subsequent buyers will not come in and build into their views.

And, finally, we do not allow cantilevered construction as many mountain communities in North Carolina do. The reason is to preserve the beauty of the views for everyone - not just for the owners in the cantilevered home.

THE ARTS

Before there was Edward Cullen, Sookie and Bill, Buffy and Angel, and Lestat; there was Count Dracula- the enigmatic and mysterious titular character at the center of Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror novel. Parkway Playhouse audiences will come face to face with the insidious and original vampire with a production of Dracula that will run through October 8. Performances will be held Thursdays- Saturdays. Tickets range from $10 to $17 with discounts available to students, senior citizens, active military, and groups of 10 or more. Curtain time is 7:30pm and there will be a 5pm performance on Sunday October 2.

The Parkway Playhouse will be holding open auditions for Beautiful Star: An Appalachian Nativity, a play with music by NC writer/director Preston Lane and NC musician Laurellyn Dossett. Auditions will be on Saturday, October 8 from 2-6 pm and Sunday, October 9 from 12-5 pm. The cast will include musicians and actors and the cast of the show requires men and women ranging from 16-60s. The production will require musicians who can play guitar, banjo, and fiddle. The musical style is bluegrass and musicians interested in being considered should be prepared to accompany themselves.

On October 15 from 9am – Noon there will be a work day at the theater followed by a hotdog and hamburger cookout. There’s something for everybody: yard work, general cleaning, painting inside and out, organizing, and may other duties. Please help out by volunteering to put the Playhouse to bed for the winter. Best Fall Recipe - Farmers' Market Fall Favorite - 2011 WNC Chef Challenge Winner - Nate Allen (Guest Author)

Now at the local markets there is a prolific amount of hearty winter squash. My favorite mixture of local fall ingredients has been roasted delicata squash with caramelized shallots, chestnuts, parsley and toasted squash seeds.

2 delicata squash, halved lengthwise, seeds removed and cleaned

2 tblsp olive oil

salt and pepper

4 sprigs fresh thyme

6 chestnuts, scored and roasted and removed from shells

1 tblsp butter, unsalted

6 shallots peeled

Place the four halves of delicata, cut side up, on a baking sheet and season with salt and pepper, drizzle with one tblsp of olive oil and place one sprig of fresh thyme in each. Roast at 400 degrees for thirty minutes. Meanwhile place the other tblsp of oil in a saute pan and toast the seeds with a little salt and pepper until they are golden. Remove and allow to cool on a plate. Use the same pan to caramelize whole shallots and chestnuts together on medium heat in the butter until they have softened and have browned a bit. Mix the shallots and chestnuts with the toasted seeds and divide into the four squash cavities and return to the oven to get everything uniformly hot and serve. A little bit of fresh herb such as basil or parsley is great on top just before you serve. Enjoy.

Allen and Bevo on a mission trip to Guatemala with other Burnsville residents

Twenty two years ago we moved from Charlotte to Burnsville, N.C. Neither of us grew up in Yancey County. We just liked it because of the genuine people, plentiful National Forests and streams, and rural life-style. When we needed a “city fix,” we went to New York or Chicago. But day to day, Burnsville suited us well. We raised four children here, living just outside of town on the Cane River. Today, our children have opted for a permanent “city fix,” living in Atlanta and Greensboro. They return often enough and speak fondly of their childhood here. All six of us agree that moving to Yancey County was one of our best life decisions.

Newly retired, we are free to live anywhere. We have chosen to remain in Yancey County for the same reasons that she initially attracted us. Beautiful scenery, a quaint town, moderate but healthy growth, and an influx of new people continue to make this an encouraging place to live. Deciding first that we did not need the large, unique home that once housed six of us and pets, we put our house on the market and began looking for a place to build.

About a year ago, we “discovered” The Cove at Celo Mountain, having seen and heard good news about it from many. We visited The Cove several times, as well as many other resort communities. From the start, we were attracted as much to those who developed and manage The Cove as we were to the property itself. Having once been a practicing lawyer, I wanted to be certain that we were investing in a viable development, created by honest, genuine people. We heard very candid answers to every question posed, with no pressure to buy unless the property was a perfect match for us. It was.

Today, we own a fabulous lot near the top of the development, and are excited about building a home there soon.

Living in The Cove will allow us to travel frequently, without worrying about security when we are gone. We are often in Guatemala, having logged over twenty trips there in the last decade. We are not “missionaries,” but like many of you we feel blessed to live in America with an excess of “comfort” and that the blessing requires a commitment to others. So, we often go to rural, poor villages in Guatemala to build houses or churches, play with children, provide minimal medical and health care, and provide Christian education. Like most who do part-time mission work, we have discovered that for every blessing we offer, we receive ten in return.

The Cove will soon be a vibrant community of people from all over the country, living together part-time in a small, beautiful park; and sharing their varied life experiences. We look forward to meeting those who choose to live in our community. We are blessed to be part of it.

I mentioned it in last week's blog, but the news is getting better every day for us at THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN.

Micaville Initiative

The Taylor Togs building is in Micaville just east of the OOAK (One-of-a-Kind) Gallery just a few miles from The Cove at Celo Mountain on the Micaville Loop before heading up 80 S, a NC State Scenic Highway. This is just off of NC State Scenic Highway 19 E (being made into a 4-lane). I hope to get renderings and plans from the Executive Director of the project in the next few days and follow with these and further details in the next Cove at Celo Mountain blog. "A Press Release will be going out soon regarding the Mountain Heritage Expo Center, the 60,000 sf multi-use community facility (being converted from the former Taylor Togs Bldg). Renovations are underway, starting with energy upgrades funded with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds which include a photovoltaic system, a solar thermal system, insulation, and daylighting. The facility is being designed in cooperation with community partners with everything 'Local' in mind and will include:

Fall Foliage 2011 Forecast and Festivals

If you have never experienced fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, you are missing the treat of a lifetime. Good Morning America just named this one of the 10 Most Beautiful Places in America and Fodor's named it one of Top 21 Places (in the World) to Visit in 2011. Whale Rescue from the Blue Ridge Mtns, Going Green with Solar, New Health Initiatives for our Area

Just got back from Boston and the whale watch there and incredible "MIT +150 = Inventional Wisdom" being touted at MIT (150 MIT-related inventions that changed the world.) Well, we have our own it seems - of both - right here within 10 minutes of THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN. It sounds improbable, but the rescue of a young whale (the endangered humpback), was accomplished by one of our local citizens (Blue Ridge Mountains) while in the Sea of Cortez with friends. He has made the rounds of national TV programs - including 20/20. His YouTube video has had close to 4 million visitors.

And from Florida to the Pensacola area of Burnsville, NC

"A planned solar energy facility in Yancey County could provide more than 50 jobs for area residents if a joint effort between the county and three other counties becomes a reality. The proposed solar energy project is being developed by a Florida company on a tract of land already purchased in Pensacola. Part of the 14.7 acre location off Hwy 197-S would be used for non-reflective solar panels that would not distract from the surrounding landscape, according to Yancey County Manager Nathan Bennett who unveiled the plan to commissioners last week. The company, Nationwide Renewable Energy is working with Mayland Community College and McDowell Technical Community College to establish a certified education and jobs training program to support the solar energy business in Avery, Mitchell, Yancey and McDowell Counties. The high tech program will be based around four individual solar farms, one in each county and is estimated to cost around $65 million.(This is near the 450 acres the owners of THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN have for future development.)

In Micaville - close to THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN
Mountain Heritage Expo Center, Burnsville, Yancey County will implement energy-efficient retrofits and upgrades to an existing center for small businesses. Measures implemented will include: improved insulation, daylighting, solar thermal hot water system, and a photovoltaic system to offset energy use. This project will create or two to four jobs and save 2,905 MBTUs annually. Total grant: $378,020.

In Spruce Pine - near The Blue Ridge Regional Hospital (part of Mission Hospital of Asheville)
East Carolina has selected Mitchell County as one of ten locations to locate a dental facility for 4th-year students enrolled at the University’s new dentistry school. The school recently announced that it will build a $3 million service learning center near the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. Full time dental school faculty members will staff the center that will provide a general dentistry office with 16 treatment rooms and classroom space for students in their final year of study. The center will serve Mitchell County residents and those of surrounding counties, providing lower cost dental care for those in need. The Samuel L. Phillips Family Foundation gift of three four year dental scholarships to Mitchell, Avery and Yancey County area students played a big part in ECU’s decision to locate the facility in the Tri-County area. The project should be up and running by 2014.

On the campuses of our award-winning middle schools
Yancey County Schools was awarded $500,000 through the Health Resources and Services Administration to fully construct and equip two 1,400 square foot facilities at East Yancey and Cane River middle schools. These facilities will become the new home for the school based health centers and will free up the space currently being used at each school to make new classrooms, offices, etc. The size and the layout of the new space used will be upgraded to provide for improved clinic staffing, enhancement of current services, and the addition of new services. “This project is a tremendous opportunity for our school system to improve the quality of care our students receive at our health centers,” said Superintendent Dr. Tony Tipton. “We are very appreciative both of this grant award and our partnership with the Toe River Health District which provides the staffing for the health centers. Through their work, our students are healthier and better prepared to learn.” These new facilities will be paired with telemedicine - the technology based on Internet videoconferencing and using specially equipped stethoscopes and camera so a health care provider can examine a student, listen to his or her heart and lungs, look into ears, eyes, nose and throat. Doctors would be able to assess the effectiveness of a newly prescribed asthma medication or determine if a child with a stomach ache needs to be seen urgently in the emergency room or could return to class. The intent is to promote healthier and happier students and ultimately improve attendance and graduation rates."

New Yancey County Library - "One of North Carolina's Best"

Finally, after years of hard work by many people, our new library in Yancey County had its Grand Opening this past weekend. Our cutting-edge library is in a "National Register of Historic Places" building in the Historic Arts District on a beautiful hill overlooking the town. This stalwart centerpiece of the district is surrounded by the venerable Parkway Playhouse to the north, the Yancey County Heritage Center to the west, King's Mountain Playground to the south, and the Old Burnsville Gym to the southeast. A humorous, clever speech on the historical background of the building and its location was given by J. Todd Bailey at the Grand Opening. His "Yancey Collegiate Institute and Other Miracles on Baptist Hill" is a must-read for area history devotees.

"Research a favorite topic at the new computer center with state-of-the-art technology and broad-band service.
Work on one of 18 desktop computers or one of 12 laptop computers that may be used throughout with wireless capability. The library is the first public library in WNC to utilize thin client technology for desktop computers. Mpact Systems, a company selected by the Franklin Graham group to install their teleconference systems internationally, installed the teleconferencing and presentation systems. Mpact also installed the telemedicine systems in Yancey and Mitchell counties. Teleconferencing in the library – in both a small conference room and the large community meeting area -- support distance learning and other educational programs that can link from anywhere in the world. It also will provide small business, government, health care, and human service agencies with opportunities to communicate statewide, reducing the cost and risk of travel for meetings and other communication.

Enjoy the art throughout as well as the gallery space on the second floor and the acclimatized archive room. The library project had its beginning more than 10 years ago with a commitment of support by Everett and Ruth Kivette that will help sustain the library and gallery in the years to come.
Be amazed and awed by acclaimed Blacksmith Mike Hensley's 6-foot wrought iron lantern as you enter the front door. The artist in Everett Kivette saw the space above the door in the portico of the new library and thought it needed something. He remembered the lantern in the portico of the White House and another project took flight. Kivette wanted something that celebrated native craftsmanship and complimented the historic structure that would house his gallery and archives that is to preserve and promote regional art and craft. He had to look no further than the forge of Bea Hensley and his son Mike, both recognized nationally as masters of the craft of blacksmithing. Kivette contacted Library Project Director Theresa Coletta and the two paid a visit to the legendary Hensley Forge in Spruce Pine.The only instructions he gave Mike was that the finished piece be a hexagon. The light ended up being over six feet tall and 36 inches in diameter, including the scroll work. (Mike was trained by his father, Bea Hensley (a NC Living Treasure), who was trained by Daniel Boone VI - donor/artist of Parkway Playhouse wrought-iron lanterns.

Burnsville and Spruce Pine, NC are designated Trout Cities in the NC Wildlife Resource Commission’s Mountain Heritage Trout Waters program. Anglers have no bait/lure restrictions, no size limit restrictions and a 7-trout-per-day creel limit during the season. Are you a visitor with no fishing equipment with you? Not to worry. Loaner rods and reels are available free-of-charge on a first-come, first-serve basis through the Commission’s Tackle Loaner Program, which offers rods and reels, including spin cast, ultralight and fly rods, for the day. Want to teach your child or grandchild to fly fish? After returning the loaner rod and reel, first-time participants under 16 receive a free mini-tackle box containing tackle – such as lures, flies, and spinners.
