UPCOMING CULTURAL EVENTS NEAR THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN

The high season of the High Country around North Carolina's Blue Ridge Parkway is almost upon us. Before long our celebrated fall foliage season will begin, but we say farewell to summer in a big way up around Celo Mountain.

Burnsville, NC, boasts the oldest continuously running summer theater in North Carolina, The Parkway Playhouse - now in its 64th season. The world premier of The Ballad of Tom Dooley, the musical of a local legend, just ended this weekend to rave reviews. Pride and Prejudice is the theatrical valediction for the season August 24th- September 4th.

August 28th is Altapass Orchard's All-Stars Encore Show... Again - showcasing unbelievable local musical talent.

August 28th the Carolina Barn Dance presents The Folsom Prison Gang - a Johnny Cash tribute band from Western North Carolina. The band produces quality live performances that recreate the popular vintage sounds associated with Johnny Cash's music.

September 4th the Carolina Barn Dance presents Kat Williams - a jazz, blues and R&B singer that always leaves her audience screaming for more.

September 10th and 11th the historic town square of Burnsville will host the Carolina Mountain Literary Festival, which will have over 25 authors, poets, playwrights, and historians as well as writing, papermaking and bookmaking workshops ongoing simultaneously at businesses around the town square. This popular event attracts thousands of book lovers from all over Western North Carolina and beyond.

September 25th is the Old Timey Day - This is a celebration and preservation of our heritage. There will be demonstrations of yesterday's crafts, traditional mountain music, clogging, antique tractors and cars, games, food and much more.

The temperature cools, the wild turkeys forage along the back roads, and the mountains begin their patchwork turn of colors. WELL, we knew it. Buncombe Tourism (Asheville) knew it. They have consistently ranked our Highway 19 E (through Burnsville, NC) and 80 S (which runs just by our beautiful COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN) as one of 4 Most Scenic Drives in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. THE BATTLE OF BURNSVILLE REENACTMENT August 14th and 15th

It turns out that our beautiful COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN is in a path akin to the Mason-Dixon Line. We are between the two Tar Heel State Counties of Yancey and Mitchell. Yancey sided with the Confederates and Mitchell with the Union in the Civil War that was anything but. We all know from our history classes and family legends that brother was pitted against brother and neighbor against neighbor during this war. Local lore has it that the war of the Blue and the Gray still continues here - even among these most genteel people. Historian and author Michael C. Hardy debunks as myth the rumor that Mitchell County was established from parts of Yancey, Watauga and Buncombe Counties because of its pro-Union leanings. There was a battle in Burnsville (Yancey) that is still remembered. Civil war enthusiasts and history buffs take note: The women raid Burnsville first in this battle!

MOUNTAIN PIECEMAKERS QUILT GUILD SHOW

One of the most celebrated heritage crafts of the Appalachian Mountains are the handmade quilts of our area. Some of the best of these can be found at the annual Quilt Show held in historic Burnsville, NC. The beauty of these painstakingly intricate quilts will both amaze and intrigue you. Art almost always evokes a curiosity about the mind and life of the artist behind the craft, a wonder about or a revelation of why it resonates so deeply with us.

In our blog, I often mention the salt-of-the-earth people that have been here for generations or the creative souls that seem to have been beckoned here. Their works can inspire, calm, or disturb us - but they unquestionably awaken us. Always the quilts comfort us, call us home - or, at least, rekindle in us memories of those we have loved well.


My daughter celebrated the rite of baptism in our ancient Toe River, witnessed by every person in the small mountain church I attend. When she got engaged, she was invited to the home of one of the church members - a family who has lived here for generations and whose varied family tree makes up most of the church. All remaining quilts made by this septuagenarian's grandmother were lovingly laid out on the front porch for my daughter's choosing. Not surprisingly, she selected the "Wedding Ring" pattern, and both she and her husband cherish the heritage, love, memories, stability, and perseverance the quilt evokes.
