Locally Grown Community Gem

They call themselves “the locally grown Community Theater”, Burnsville residents call it a local gem.  May 4th begins the annual season of the Parkway Playhouse, the oldest continually operating summer theater in North Carolina.  In 1946 Professor William Raymond Taylor founded Burnsville Playhouse, Inc. and School of Dramatic Arts, the first of its kind in the South. As professor of English at the University of North Carolina (WCUNC) in Greensboro, he planned the courses of study for the new venture, as well as the plans for a complete conversion of the old Burnsville High School gymnasium into a well-equipped theatre.  In the 1990s the Parkway Playhouse became an independent theater company, and is now operating as a small professional theater company serving the mountain region of Western North Carolina.

The Parkway Playhouse has always been a teaching theater, mentoring college students and incorporating local youth in their productions.  Programs are available for college interns, high school apprentices and summer performing arts camps and classes for children, all of which provide enriching educational programs for local and summer resident youth. THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN's Feel - How it Makes Us Feel - Homeowner Testimonial

The Pregartner home under construction.  From John:  Our new home in The Cove at Celo Mountain is simple, elegant, functional.  My background is construction, and I am highly involved in the building process.

The Pregartners are in town this week enjoying the gorgeous spring we are having as well as the progress on their incredible new home.    John,  (together with Crowder Banks and Associates of Burnsville, NC)  is building their custom design home on their long-view estate home site.  They took a few moments to share with me why they chose THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN above other gated or non-gated communities in Western North Carolina. 

            In the summer of 2009, a business trip took my wife to NC –  she always wanted to go to Asheville so she incorporated that visit on her way back home.  She saw an ad for The Cove at Celo Mountain on the back of the Laurel of Asheville magazine and called the sales office.  The ad said something about a "Castle in the Mountains….or was it a Cabin in the Woods".   Anyway, she spoke with Jana and told her that she would like to drive up and take a look at the property. 

                Paul, the Sales Manager,  was out-of-town, so she toured the community with Randy Frederick, the COO, for about 3 hours.  She told me how beautiful it was and that she and Randy visited every lot and even got stuck in the mud…. , she thought that was just fabulous.  It is all I heard for days.   We had been looking at many properties and were planning to move as we wanted to scale down and move into a home that required less maintenance.  She told me, “I think I have found the spot.”    All I kept thinking was ….  “In North Carolina?”

                So ….. We planned at trip and packed the car, and headed down to WNC to take another look.  We stayed at a bed and breakfast in the historic hometown of Spruce Pine and toured with a Realtor all around Western North Carolina – from Brevard and Hendersonville to Weaverville.  Then we visited The Cove at Celo Mountain.  (My wife, being the greatest sales person, left "THE COVE"  for last - knowing I would probably feel what she felt when seeing the area.)   I remember saying ….  "This is it.”   THE COVE  is a different feel - the grounds are extremely well maintained, the views unbelievable,  and the entire setting is spectacular.   It just feels good.  It is a special place.  It is quiet - The trout ponds, the trails and the special care taken to create an environment that is simple but elegant all in one. I knew in my gut that this was the place.  I did not need to look anywhere else.

            We love The Cove at Celo Mountain’s feel – how it makes us feel.  Everyone we have met is most helpful and like our new family.    For the next phase of our lives, we will call The Cove at Celo Mountain "home".

In a previous post, I told you that THE COVE AT CELO MOUNTAIN is located between the award-winning cities of Asheville and Boone, NC - just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.  This post brings us down even closer to home. Our beautiful, small sanctuary setting is also situated right in the center of two of the most beautiful counties of the North Carolina Blue Ridge - Yancey and Mitchell.  While officially part of Yancey County, we consider both Burnsville (Yancey) and Spruce Pine (Mitchell) our hometowns and treat you to historic B&B lodging and fine dining in each when you visit with us, so you can get to know not only the beauty of our surrounding area but the salt-of-the earth people that live here as well.  Here is our backyard through photos...along with some of my favorite local history and highlights.

Geographical Fact:  Mt. Mitchell State Park – while located in Yancey county, is geographically equal distance from both Burnsville (Yancey) and Spruce Pine (Mitchell) – and is the highest peak of the oldest mountains in the world (the Appalachians), and the highest peak east of the Mississippi at 6.684 ft

Historical Fact:  A defining time for the nation and specifically this area – the Civil War separated these two sister counties (and families) with Mitchell predominantly siding with the Union and Yancey with the Confederacy.   

Cultural Fact: TRAC - Toe River Arts Council Open Studio Tours - June and December - are dubbed the “Premier Open Studio Tour in the Country” We have more artists, per capita, in these 2 counties than anywhere else in America – also ongoing exhibits, plein aire and other events – with galleries in both Yancey (Burnsville) and Mitchell (Spruce Pine)

Educational Fact:  Mayland Community College has its Main Campus in Mitchell (Spruce Pine), but has campuses that service students in Mitchell. Avery and Yancey counties – thus the name MAY (land). Mayland was ranked the #4 Best Community College in America in 2010 in a study done by the University of Texas in Austin and highlighted in the Washington Monthly magazine

 "Mitchell County  was formed in 1861 from Yancey, Watauga,  Caldwell,  Burke and McDowell counties. It was named in honor of Dr. Elisha Mitchell,  a professor at the University of North Carolina. While on an exploring expedition of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, Dr. Mitchell fell and was killed. He was buried on the top of this lofty mountain. It is in the western section of the State and is bounded by the state of Tennessee and Avery, McDowell and Yancey counties."

Geographical Landmarks:  A river runs through it – The Toe River and a Train Depot and heritage trains run through downtown.  A split Main street – Upper and Lower Levels – Oak and Locust
