We are home to the world-renowned Penland School of Crafts, more artists - per capita - than anywhere else in America, the Quilt Trails of Western North Carolina, the Empty Bowl Project - a grassroots effort that has raised millions for hunger locally and world-wide, the Riddle Fest (Leslie Riddle - genius behind the Carter/Cash family music legend) the historic Parkway Playhouse and more. This weekly update highlights the arts, entertainment and dining, area events and attractions, shopping, "crafty" things to do, educational opportunities, and miscellaneous items. Here is a sampling:
This Saturday, October 8th, come out to the Town Square from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm for the Burnsville Fire Department Rod Run. All makes and models of trucks, cars, tractors, and motorcycles. Food, music, and great HotRods are all scheduled for this event.
Also on Saturday, the Family Violence Coalition Rockin’ Out Loud and Proud for teens takes place on the Square from noon to 8pm. Looks to be a great day on the Square!!!
Go ahead and mark your calendars for the next Stars on the Square, to be held on Saturday, October 22nd at the Town Square from 7:30 p.m. to Midnight. This event is sponsored by Small Town Main Street Committee, Town of Burnsville, and the Chamber of Commerce. Refreshments will be sold by the Burnsville Rotary Club. Come out and join us for a special night of star gazing. In case of cloudy skies (perish the thought) the event will be held on October 29th.
As you are aware, we often ask for volunteers to help at the Visitor’s Center. Well, this week I want to take the opportunity to thank our current volunteers. We have a wonderful group of volunteers who give so much of their time and talent to the Chamber and to the community at large. Billie Tomberlin, Hope Martin, Andy Faller, Bill Baker, Chris Carter, Mary Anne Deaton, Phillip Ray, and Ellen Denker – you guys are the best!! Thanks for helping us out and cheering us on.
Congratulations to our volunteer, Phillip Ray, on being asked to return for several appearances on WLOS Channel 13 Crafter’s Corner. Phillip will demonstrate chair caning, upholstery, furniture refinishing and other crafts that he utilizes at his local business, Ray’s Chair Bottoming & Antiques. Phillip has made one previous appearance and we look forward to seeing him on the show several times in the future.
Just a little note – the Black Mountain campground and the hiking trails that were previously closed due to bear activity are now opened.
We are considering sending the weekly E-Blast to individual, non-members of the Chamber. As a business, if you have a special client e-mail list that you would like to receive the E-Blast and thereby be informed of your special events just forward those to me at the Chamber and we will include those addresses in our weekly emailing.

AREA EVENTS / ATTRACTIONS
The Burnsville Town Scamper will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011. The 5K race will begin at the Town Square with registration ending at 8:30am. Water will be provided on the course and food and drinks will be provided after the race. Proceeds will benefit the Yancey County Schools Foundation. FALL HOME TOUR

YANCEY HISTORY ASSOCIATION
Wednesday, October 12th will be the date of the History Association’s general meeting. The Community Room of the Yancey Public Library will be location, beginning at 6:30 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend and members of the community are also encouraged to attend this meeting. Light refreshments will be served followed by a short business meeting which will include an election of officers.

THE ARTS
Before there was Edward Cullen, Sookie and Bill, Buffy and Angel, and Lestat; there was Count Dracula- the enigmatic and mysterious titular character at the center of Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror novel. Parkway Playhouse audiences will come face to face with the insidious and original vampire with a production of Dracula that will run through October 8. Performances will be held Thursdays- Saturdays. Tickets range from $10 to $17 with discounts available to students, senior citizens, active military, and groups of 10 or more. Curtain time is 7:30pm and there will be a 5pm performance on Sunday October 2.
The Parkway Playhouse will be holding open auditions for Beautiful Star: An Appalachian Nativity, a play with music by NC writer/director Preston Lane and NC musician Laurellyn Dossett. Auditions will be on Saturday, October 8 from 2-6 pm and Sunday, October 9 from 12-5 pm. The cast will include musicians and actors and the cast of the show requires men and women ranging from 16-60s. The production will require musicians who can play guitar, banjo, and fiddle. The musical style is bluegrass and musicians interested in being considered should be prepared to accompany themselves.
On October 15 from 9am – Noon there will be a work day at the theater followed by a hotdog and hamburger cookout. There’s something for everybody: yard work, general cleaning, painting inside and out, organizing, and may other duties. Please help out by volunteering to put the Playhouse to bed for the winter. TOE RIVER ARTS COUNCIL
The Stripe, works inspired by rural NC, fiber rug hooking, Lori LaBerge. A reception will be held on October 14th from 5-7 pm, with the show running through November 12th.

Core Show 2011 – Work by Penland’s current Core Fellowship students will be on exhibit October 14 – 21, with an opening reception on Friday, October 14th from 7-9 pm.
Penland School of Crafts is offering two short workshops on the preservation of historic buildings. Both will take place at the school campus. The first is October 14-15, and will cover historic designation on the National Register and in your local community, the use of tax credits for individuals and communities as they restore and rehabilitate historic architecture, and special breakout sessions for historic preservation commissioners.
